Insurance Services

A friend recently asked me two questions.

“To what do you attribute your success?”  And, “What is the one thing that differentiates your organization from all the competitors in the marketplace?”

Brilliant life-changing questions….and the answer to both is the same.

We are here to be “Of Service.”

This is what we set out to do daily with every phone call, email, text, lunch/coffee meeting, change request, home and flood evaluation, auto change, and binder updates. Our workdays are wildly full of inquiries, requests from clients, lenders, real estate agents, underwriters, colleagues, and it takes focus to think first of serving well and being present for others. We sometimes fall short of this mark, but being of SERVICE is our primary goal.

One of my favorite quotes of all time, attributed to the theologian, philosopher, and physician Albert Schweitzer:

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know; the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.”

I was introduced to the work of Dr. Schweitzer in college, and I have been moved by his thoughts on service and meaning ever since.  His view of service is that it is ultimately the purpose of life. And success is not the key to happiness; rather, happiness is the key to success. This quote leaves me with two big thoughts.  What does it mean to serve? And is service truly the path to happiness?

After over 30 years in a variety of business pursuits, banking, insurance, and several entrepreneurial endeavors, I believe I have a solid understanding of the concept of service. And, to this end, being of service is the intrinsic culture of Goosehead Insurance on Hilton Head Island.

What Service Should Be

In the words of Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, “Service rests on the premise that the nature of life is sacred, that life is a holy mystery which has an unknown purpose.  When we serve, we know that we belong to life and to that purpose. From the perspective of service, we are all connected: All suffering is like my suffering, and all joy is like my joy. The impulse to serve emerges naturally and inevitably from this way of seeing.”

Serving is significantly different from fixing or helping. While fixing and helping are not bad things, the distinction stems from our individual motivation, “our way of seeing.”  When I “fix” a problem, I use my energy and expertise to make some issue go away, nothing more. It happens from an ego-driven place where I can control the situation, solve a problem, and check that thing off a to-do list.

Helping, while similar to fixing, stems from a place of inequality.  I have something you need, so you are at some “lower state,” and I will exercise my experience or position to care for you and this issue.  Fixing and helping are useful, and plenty of good work is done in the world in the name of fixing and helping.  It is just that there is more. When I slip into a day of fixing and helping, I am drained, depleted, and utterly exhausted, making a b-line to face plant in the sofa.

If doing good work were a continuum of human relationships, it would look like this:

Fixing                            Helping                   Serving

Service happens on an entirely different level.  We serve from a place of “wholeness.”  It is a way of standing next to our friend from the position, “We are all in this together, and I seek to understand you and ensure your needs are addressed.  All of them”.  It may look like I am unloading insurance contracts on the members of my coastal community, but if that’s all I am doing, I’m out!

From a place of deep love of people, my clients are friends and neighbors.  We live together in a unique and beautiful place with a host of special risks. For some very strange reason or defect of character, I get enormous gratification out of seeking out the most comprehensive and cost-effective insurance solutions for our clients.  This is the work I love.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How Do Insurances Work?

Basically, the insurer will guarantee payment for a future event that is unknown at this time while the other party, known as the insured or the policyholder, pays a lower premium to the insurer so they can be guaranteed protection against an unpredictable future occurrence that is covered by the insurance policy.

  • What Are The 7 Main Types Of Insurance?

Every individual requires, or should at least consider, these seven most prevalent insurance types, including life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance, long-term care insurance, homeowners and renter’s insurance, automobile insurance, and liability insurance.

  • Why Is Insurance Important?

A major reason why purchasing insurance is vital is that it guarantees that you have the finances you will need in the event of any type of difficulty in life, and this is mainly why insurance is such a critical component of financial planning. Insurance coverage for health, travel, automobile, and house are all available through a general insurance provider.
